Have always been a fan of Kate Bush.
Spotted and signed when she was just 16. Scoring her first number one, Wuthering Heights (a song inspired by Emily Bronte’s classic English literary work, no less), at just 19, the first woman ever to have a self-written number one single in the UK (1979), only ever doing one proper tour and going on to write another twenty-four UK top 40 singles… Eat your heart out, Madonna (not to even mention the current, unmentionable pretender). Kate Bush has got way more talent and hasn’t had to graft as hard as either to still make an incredible impact on pop culture.
And now comes this wee update of Deeper Understanding (which originally featured on Bush’s 1989 album The Sensual World). Both song and video are proper bolts from the blue and quite timeless works of art pop genius. The latter features Noel Fielding and Robbie Coltrane (two British comedy legends from completely different generations, both of whom could be deemed to have had an equally unique impact on pop culture), while the new chorus, with its computerized vox, is clearly a knowing wink to all the hits featuring detuned vocals that have become so ubiquitous in pop music of late. Bush is smart enough to know that this kind of gimmick should be handled with caution and exhibits characteristic restraint by not over-doing it at all. Old school Bush fans and purists will undoubtedly hate the way the classic has been re-touched, its perfect image altered forever by this contemporary twist but, as remixes go, it’s as faithful to the original as you get. Moreover, the effect sits perfectly within the context of the song’s lyrical message, which has lost none of its resonance in today’s ever-machine-driven world, however you feel about social networking sites. No doubt Adam Curtis would approve.
And Bush is also a trained dancer, as you can see from these videos for much earlier pop killers Running Up That Hill (still play this record out all the time), Babooshka (check the fantastic outfit), Them Heavy People and Hammer Horror.
Hard to fault her, really.
