Fresh from those dedicated souls at stalwart London label BBE, the new album from New York native Git (pronounced ‘jit’, after the original name for ‘b-boy’) is well worth investigating, especially for this nugget of a track, which has just emerged as the lead single.

Coming on like a cross between ex-Specials Fun Boy Three and immortal pop maidens Bananarama‘s 1982 ska-pop confection, It Ain’t What You Do (itself a cover of a 1939 calypso jazz classic featuring Ella Fitzgerald) and something with a fair bit more Afro-Latin soul beating in its heart, If You Just Make Love To Me is an infectious dancefloor sizzler with crossover potential.

The rest of the album recalls classic hip hop beats from the likes of DJ Shadow and Madlib, among others, plus some broken beat, a seam Git was actually mining back in 2000, when he gained some notoriety with his Saxxy cut under the alias Busy Fingers.  Hardly surprising that he’s also been picked up by fellow Afro-Latin champion Osunlade for releases on the excellent Yoruba label (who also licensed this album to BBE for its UK release) not to mention coming under the wing of NYC behemoths Giant Step.
